GROWING THE GAME INDOORS
Indoor
bowls is where the future of lawn bowls lies. Climate change and
environmental issues are quickly taking the fun out of it. With
that in mind, and encouraged by our success with the MLS Sportsplex
indoor project in Scarborough, we are now seriously promoting
accelerated development of indoor bowls centres across the country and
the introduction of Short Mat bowls in high schools
To facilitate this
objective, we are now proposing complete turnkey projects where
pre-engineered buildings designed specifically for lawn bowling and
sometimes soccer, can be erected in a very cost effective manner. The
buildings are designed to accommodate 2, 4 and 6 rinks, 18 and 28ft
ceilings, with sufficient space for all the necessary amenities. In the

Indoor play demand - accelerating
fast
Carpet Bowls
Demand to
play bowls indoors on shorter carpets is also increasing at an accelerated pace.
The ever aging population has made Carpet Bowling much in demand
in most recreation centres, because of the use of smaller,
lighter, bowls and the 30-foot length of the playing surface.
Now Residences for seniors have also discovered the joys of
Carpet Bowls.
The Game: Bowls
are delivered from an 18 inch wide space at the front of the
carpet and must avoid an 18 inch circular block placed in the
centre of the carpet. The Jack is 2.5 inches in diameter (the
same as for Lawn/Indoor Bowls) and is placed on a centre line 3
- 6 feet from the end of the carpet. It does not need to be
extra-heavy because, in another departure from the other lawn
variants, the bowls used are smaller. Players rarely own their
own set of bowls; instead the centres usually owns the bowls for
their club members' use. |

Short Mat Bowls |
|
|
However,
the biggest increased demand for indoor play comes from the
popularity of the Short Mat game. Played with normal lawn
bowls on a 45’ by 6’ carpet, Short Mat has attained a very high
level of popularity. Big money tournaments are springing
up wherever the game is played. Because the Short Mat game
is portable, as mats are easy to move about and roll out, clubs
can emerge in school gyms, convention centres, hotel ballrooms,
banquet halls, and, even on factory floors or office building
lobbies.
